How to paint over rust

Painting over rust…can it be done? Of course it can! If you’re currently facing this problem, you’re in the right place. At Jenolite, we’re experts in rust removal — and we’re on hand to tell you how you can paint over rust quickly, easily and efficiently.

Firstly, what is rust?

Rust usually sets in on steel when its protective coating starts to break down as a result of oxygen and moisture reacting towards one another. This then goes on to attack the metal surface, resulting in rust.

Unfortunately, rust can become a real nightmare and it’s likely to cause a serious amount of damage once it sets in. Apart from being visually unappealing and in some cases; a hazard to our health, rust can start to spread if left untreated. Over a gradual amount of time, it’s not uncommon for the metal to weaken, which can lead to further failures in machinery or having to fork out on costly replacements.

Some years ago, the only solution to get rid of rust was to grind it off or use a wire brush to remove the scales from the surface to paint over rust. However, this was never going to be a long-term solution. Manual treatment is effective for quick removal of rust for the here and now, but there’s a good chance it would return in future.

So, how do I paint over rust?

1. Choosing the right product for the job

When you come to paint a piece of metal and realise that rust has set in, you may believe there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it. The good news is that you can!

It’s possible to give your rust a complete renovation by painting over it, without having to remove it manually. Even better — it promises long-lasting results. Sound too good to be true? Believe us — you’re going to be impressed by our latest range of products that allow you to paint over rust.

If a surface has already been painted and rust has set in over it, the first thing you need to do is remove the old paint from the metal structure in order to repair the damaging corrosion.

Enter Jenolite’s Paint Remover Spray – 400ml! Upon applying the product, you’ll start to notice the old paint disappear in a matter of just 3 minutes on lacquer and 15 minutes on cross-linked paints. You don’t even have to worry about the coating being applied evenly across the surface, as the solution features good wetting-out properties to ensure an even finish; meaning none of the product will be wasted.
