Will this give me a mirror chrome finish? No — and it's important to be upfront about this. True mirror chrome is achieved through electroplating or vacuum metalising — industrial processes that cannot be replicated in an aerosol can. Jenolite Chrome Spray Paint delivers a premium chrome-effect finish: bright, highly reflective, and significantly more metallic than standard silver paint — but not a reflective mirror surface. For the best possible result, apply over a smooth, fully cured gloss black basecoat using multiple thin coats.
Why does my finish look dull or similar to standard silver paint? This is almost always down to one of three things: applying too heavy a coat, handling or touching the surface before it has fully cured, or spraying over an unprepared or rough surface. The reflective metallic pigments in this product sit at the outermost layer of the coating — they are extremely sensitive to both technique and premature disturbance. Apply 2–3 very light coats from 20–25cm away, allow each coat a few minutes to flash off, and do not touch the surface for up to 7 days while it cures fully.
How do I get the best possible chrome-effect finish? Follow these steps closely:
- Clean the surface thoroughly — remove all grease, wax, dust, and loose paint
- Lightly abrade smooth surfaces to create a good key
- For maximum reflectivity, apply over a smooth, fully cured gloss black basecoat — this makes a significant difference to the depth of the chrome effect
- Shake the can for at least 2 minutes before use
- Apply 2–3 very light coats, allowing a few minutes between each
- Spray from 20–25cm away in smooth, even passes
- Do not touch or handle the surface for up to 7 days
Why is a gloss black basecoat recommended? The reflective pigments in chrome-effect sprays work by reflecting light back through the outermost layer of the coating. A smooth, black surface underneath maximises contrast and depth, enhancing the reflective quality of the chrome finish. Without it — particularly on light, bare, or rough surfaces — the effect is noticeably less reflective. It's the single most impactful preparation step for getting a strong chrome result.
How long does it take to dry and cure? There are two distinct stages:
- Touch dry: approximately 60 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions
- Full cure: up to 7 days
Although the surface may feel dry after an hour, the chrome finish remains delicate throughout the curing period. Because the metallic pigments sit at the outermost layer, touching, rubbing, or assembling the piece before full cure can disturb this layer — causing the finish to appear darker or less reflective. Avoid handling the surface during this time.
Can I apply a clear lacquer over the chrome paint? In most cases, we do not recommend it — especially if preserving the chrome effect is your priority. Applying a clear lacquer over chrome-effect paint will typically:
- Reduce the overall reflectivity
- Cause the finish to appear darker or slightly grey
- Diminish the chrome-like appearance
If additional protection is essential, allow the chrome paint to fully cure (up to 7 days) before applying lacquer. Use several very light coats, allowing each to flash off before applying the next. Some reduction in the chrome effect should be expected even when applied correctly.
What surfaces can I use it on? Jenolite Chrome Spray Paint bonds to a wide range of surfaces including metal, plastic (including hard plastics), wood, stone, glass, and ceramics. For most surfaces, no primer is required — though a light primer coat on bare or highly porous materials improves adhesion and the quality of the finish. For the best result on any surface, ensure it is clean, dry, lightly abraded, and ideally finished with a gloss black basecoat before spraying.
Can I use it on plastic — will it peel? Yes — it is specifically formulated to bond to hard plastics without peeling or flaking. Clean and degrease the surface thoroughly, then lightly sand before application to provide a good key. As with all surfaces, avoid handling for up to 7 days while the coating cures fully.
Can I use it on radiators or other heat-exposed surfaces? Yes — Jenolite Chrome Spray Paint is heat resistant up to 90°C, making it suitable for domestic radiators, motorbike parts, exhaust covers, and similar decorative heat-exposed applications. It will not bubble or discolour under normal domestic heat exposure.
Can I use it outdoors? Yes. The coating is UV and weather resistant, making it suitable for outdoor ornaments, garden metalwork, exterior automotive detailing, and similar applications. For outdoor use, applying over a primed, prepared surface and allowing a full 7-day cure before exposure to the elements will give the most durable result.
How many coats do I need? Two to three very light coats gives the best reflective result. More coats applied lightly are always better than fewer heavy coats. Heavy or wet coats reduce the reflective finish and significantly increase drying time. Allow a few minutes between each coat for the solvent to flash off before applying the next.
Is this suitable for surfaces that get regular handling or heavy abrasion? Not ideally. Because the reflective metallic pigments sit at the outermost layer of the coating, the finish is more susceptible to wear from frequent contact than conventional paints. For items that will be regularly handled, washed, or subjected to abrasion, a conventional metallic silver coating may be a more practical choice. Jenolite Chrome Spray is best suited to decorative, display, or low-contact applications.
What automotive applications is it suitable for? It is well suited to decorative automotive detailing including wheel trim accents, mirror caps, ornamental grilles, gear knobs, and interior trim. It is not intended for structural or safety-critical components, or for surfaces that will be subjected to heavy mechanical wear.
How should I store the can between uses? After use, invert the can and depress the nozzle for a few seconds to clear the valve and prevent blockage. Store in a cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and away from temperatures above 50°C. Do not store near open flames or heat sources.
Why does the product look different on screen vs in person? Screen photography of chrome-effect finishes is notoriously difficult — the highly reflective surface picks up whatever surrounds it in the photography environment. The finish in person will reflect your surroundings, lighting, and viewing angle. For a realistic expectation of the result, refer to customer photos in the review section rather than studio product imagery.
