How to remove rust from bathtubs and bathroom fixtures

Posted by Ben Spargo on

Rust in the bathroom is no surprise, and many of us have been victims of the displeasing substance. We’ve all Googled the different ways we can remove rust with home remedies and concoctions, mixing up some random household ingredients, hoping this time it’ll work. However, it’s always best to trust professional products to do the job, as in the long run, you’ll save time, money, and energy by having these products in your cupboard. Many of Jenolites products can be used on a range of products and materials.

How to remove rust stains from your bathtub

We’ll start with the bathtub itself, now, before we explain how to remove rust stains from a porcelain bathtub, or any material bathtub for that matter. Make sure your bathroom is well ventilated and you have appropriate protective gear such as gloves as you are handling chemicals (although not harsh) and want to avoid any irritation. If you do however have sensitive skin we recommend using Jenolite’s non-hazardous range of products which are also better for the environment.

Once you’ve ensured your bathroom is well ventilated, either from an open window or switching on your fan, you can begin targeting the rust. Using Jenolite’s Rust Remover Liquid, start by removing any soap or oils that may be coating the bath, then, pour the desired amount into a shallow tub such as an old takeaway box or plastic box. Brush the liquid liberally on the rust and wait 15 minutes. You can use a wire brush or an old toothbrush to continually brush to keep the liquid from drying as this will help wipe the rust off and keep the ingredients active.

How to remove rust from chrome bathroom fixtures

When working on the fixtures of the bathtub, such as chrome fixtures,  Jenolite’s Thick Liquid Rust Remover is perfect. This is because the substance is designed to be non-drip, which means you can target the affected area whether it is a vertical fixture or odd shape. Start by directly applying it to the affected areas, again using a brush and working into the rust.

The trick here is to work the Jenolite into the rust every 5 minutes to keep the substance active. Apply more if necessary in order to keep it from drying out or becoming tacky. Once the rust has gone a dark grey colour, wipe dry with a lint-free cloth. You can use a wire brush to remove any excess or even repeat the process if the rust is still remaining. Jenolite also stocks a 500ml Thick Liquid Rust for smaller surfaces.

Depending on the severity of your rust. A Silicone Spray may be useful in loosening fixtures such as taps that have become stuck.

How to prevent future rust stains from appearing

It can be difficult to keep rust at bay in a bathtub. This is because it gets wet daily, and often for prolonged periods of time. We recommend wiping down the bathtub and fixtures with a towel, or you can use a rust preventer spray such as our Rust Shield Aerosol for use on metal surfaces such as taps and chrome fixtures.

Simply clean your bath, shake and spray over the taps evenly about 15-30cm away. Repeat this process if needed 2-3 times for even more rust protection, making sure you wait for each layer to dry completely (usually 15 minutes or so). Make sure you leave your bathtub and fixtures to dry for 24 hours before using it again. Increase your bathrooms shine by ending with a metal polish to further protect your bathroom fixtures and make them gleam!
